European Open 2019: Animal rights activists and heat endanger the event

According to weather forecasts, the current heat wave in Europe will continue in the next few days. For tomorrow and Friday are temperatures expected again around 40 degrees. Only on the weekend should it be a bit cooler and rainier. The extreme heat was then even the main topic at the official team leader meeting – not least because of numerous voices and complaints from animal rights activists. Therefore, the organizers have decided that the training which was planned for tomorrow will not take place. Another decision due of the record temperatures is that the first team runs will start already tomorrow evening against 19 o’clock, when the temperatures have cooled a little bit. Also, they have decided to let the opening ceremony take place without dogs. The opening ceremony will take place at 16.00 o’clock.

Forecast for Papendal

On Facebook, the critical voices pile up, some of which protest with harsh words against the event. Considering these temperatures, and the fact that the subsurface is sand quite understandable. «Make sure the weather is appropiate. It’s everything but dog-friendly to have the event on such a warm day.» Or another quote from the official Facebook page is: «Are you serious? There’s a heatwave going on. I seriously hope you will cancel this event for animal’s welfare.» Some of them are threatening to take legal action because, in their view, the event is in violation of applicable animal rights laws. Whether even further protests are planned on the spot, is currently unknown.
